WELCOME!
Grandkids Educated and Motivated (GEM) to Succeed established in Wayne
County, Michigan in 2010, is a registered charitable non profit scholarship
program. The overall purpose is to be a community organization committed to
nurturing, guiding and providing financial support to the educational goals of
grandchildren who are being raised by their grandparent/s.

Grandparents may find themselves unexpectedly raising grandchildren for any
number of reasons; the death of a parent; parental addiction to controlled
substances; incarceration; mental health issues, and even abandonment.  When this
happens there is a period of transition that can be challenging to both the
grandparent/s and the grandchild. Data taken from the 2010 Census Bureau
reported:
4.9 million children under age 18 are living in grandparent-headed
households.
67% of grandparents reporting responsibility for grandchildren are
under age 60
20% percent live in poverty; up from 18.8 percent in 2000.

183,621 children were living with relatives
143,523 children were living with grandparents
70,044 grandparents were responsible for their grandchildren
